Our 2022 event is Hybrid!

Inventions will be submitted and judged online

Due to the unusual times we continue to experience, we’ve chosen to hold our event online for a third year. Our inventors will submit a 4-5 minute video explaining their process, prototype, and display board. This video will be judged online by professionals in STEM fields from all over WNY. Our Judges are honored to be a part of this event, as they believe deeply in supporting inventors of all ages! Category and Grade winners as well as invitees to the National Invention Convention will come from these submissions.

New this year- the Inventor Showcase!

While Category and Grade awards will be solely based on the Inventor Video submissions, we are ALSO providing a venue- the Buffalo Museum of Science- for any of our participants to present their inventions to LIVE judges!* This event will be OPTIONAL and will provide an opportunity for participants to hone their confidence and communication skills. The Judges will be different from the online judges and the criteria for the ADDITIONAL Communication awards will be specific to the inventor’s live presentation and ability to answer questions about their process and prototype, etc. There will be special activities and giveaways for all participating attendees and the Award Ceremony for this event will also be live.

*COVID Protocols for the Buffalo Museum of Science will be observed at all times

You will get an email from ‘NoReply’ with reset information. Make sure to check your SPAM in case you don’t see it.

When Registration opens, create an account and register your Inventors at wnyic.zfairs.com and enter your inventor. If the parent/guardian is unable to assist the student in registering, the teacher or program leader needs to be the primary contact as an email will be sent to verify the email address as will all emails, post registration. The email will come from ‘NoReply@zfairs.com”. Each inventor will need a separate account, though they can have the same password (if the teacher is uploading many students, this will be easier!). Please go to the FAQ about teams if you are up loading team projects.

Go back into your account and click on ‘Profile” then click on ‘Edit’. If you don’t see your school, you can add it.

When Registration opens, create an account and register your Inventors wnyic.zfairs.com and enter your homeschool or program manually.

For 2022, the cost per Inventor has been reduced to $10 (this includes either an individual inventor or an inventor as part of a team). Payment be mail is accepted but WNY Invention Convention cannot accept any payments unless the students, their inventions, and their programs are registered by the deadline. Once that is completed, download and print the Pay By Mail form. Payment must be received before the day of the event.

Inventors can work alone or in teams of two. When the invention is registered, information for each student will be entered.  If the Inventors register as a team, they will present only one Invention Log with information for each student within. Inventor teams of two can be in different grades. However, they will compete in the grade of whichever team member is in the higher grade.

A student can enter up to (2) two inventions (one in Original and one in Goodwill Re-Invent). And, the student only has to pay the $20 fee once!*

The Invention Log is a valuable piece of the Invention Process and it is required in both the Original and the Goodwill Re-Invention categories. It’s a complete and accurate record of the ideas, plans, and processes by which the invention was created. Invention Logs can be used by students to prove they came up with the idea and invention. It is also a piece of the Judges scoring rubric. You can download the Invention Log here. It is not required to be in color and it also can have additional pages if necessary. It can be filled in digitally before printing.

Because our event is hybrid this year, Grade Categories and other Special Categories will be judged online. The judges have specific criteria for these online submissions and the scores determine these category winners as well as Inventors of the Year and the Directors Choice Award. To learn more about the presentation guidelines, which also include lots of helpful hints for the inventor when planning, filming, and uploading the video please click here.

To complete registration, the inventor will be required to submit their logbook.  You can submit your logbook or journal as a PDF  using either a scanner app on your phone (such as the free Adobe Scan app for iOS and Android)  and taking pictures of each page of your logbook, scanning your logbook into your computer and making it into a single PDF, or by using Google Classroom tools to create a link to your document. Once you create your PDF in one of these ways you can upload it to your profile for judging – use the “Paperwork” menu item in zFairs.
